What is a 4GV (Variation 2 Pack)?
Packagings tested and manufactured in accordance with 178.601(g)(2) are commonly known as “Variation 2” or “4GV” packaging systems. These systems allow for the shipment of articles or inner packagings (inner containers) of any type, containing solids or liquids. This exception from the normal testing requirements is useful when a shipping situation requires the use of multiple primary containers shipped in common configurations and when the number of containers to be shipped is few enough to make a certification test impracticable. For Transportation of Hazardous Materials by Aircraft, the requirements of 173.27 must also be met.
What is a Special Permit?
A Special Permit is a document issued by the Associate Administrator, or other designated Department official, under the authority of 49 U.S.C. 5117 permitting a person to perform a function that is not otherwise permitted under subchapters A or C of this chapter, or other regulations issued under 49 U.S.C. 5101 et seq. (e.g., Federal Motor Carrier Safety routing requirements). The terms “special permit” and “exemption” have the same meaning for purposes of subchapters A or C of this chapter or other regulations issued under 49 U.S.C. 5101 through 5128.
HAZPlus®‘ Special Permit Packagings (DOT SP-13355) are 4GV packaging systems that have been authorized through a Special Permit, that allow for the compliant shipment of most hazardous materials without the requirement of Hazard Labels. These packagings, marked “NO LABEL REQUIRED” are especially useful for the shipment of hazardous materials through the parcel system, in particular, in the parcel system via air transportation. This type of Special Permit Packaging is often required by UPS and Fed-EX for many hazardous materials shipments.
What is a Temperature Controlled Variation 2 Pack?
Temperature Controlled Variation 2 Packaging or “Cooler Kits” are simply 4GV rated shipping kits that incorporate a thick-wall, high efficiency (R-8) cooler that allows for the shipment of temperature sensitive materials.
